David Hicks Could Be Home For Christmas

Well at least that’s what Foreign Minister Alexander Downer  has stated.

David Hicks  has been in US custody at Guantanamo Bay for five years without his case coming to trial.

Hicks is expected to appear before a US military commission later this year and could be sentenced to life imprisonment if convicted.

It appears that the  US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has reconfirmed a deal, stating that if the Australian is convicted of terrorist related charges, that he  will be able to serve any prison sentence in Australia.

Good news for his family – if it happens.

Of course we are all aware that the David Hicks issue has damaged the credibility of the Prime Minister with the Australian electorate.  More and more people are becoming disenchanted with  the Howard governments handling of the affair.

The British government negotiated to have their three hostages returned to Britain after claims of torture at the Guantanamo Bay prison, but the Australian government has taken little or no action on behalf of David Hicks.

This whole incident has been a travesty of justice and the sooner Hicks is brought to trial and either set free to continue his life or incarcerated in Australia if found guilty, the better for all concerned.

Considering Hicks found himself on the wrong side because the Americans changed sides, seem to have been overlooked.

Australian businessman Dick Smith has been reported as saying he is angry with the Howard government’s neglect of David Hicks and  has given $60,000 to support the campaign to free David Hicks and he further plans to give more support to  secure a fair trial for Hicks.

Anna Nicole Smith Dies

Her life obviously had a lot of highs but she also suffered many low points.

seemed to have everything at her fingertips and yet her life was dogged with so many controversies from her marrying an 89 year old tycoon, to the death of her son in mysterious circumstances and the paternity row over her 5 month old daughter.

And now here once again there is controversy over the circumstances surrounding her own death  at 39 years of age.  An autopsy will be held on Friday in an attempt to determine the cause of her death.

She certainly called attention to herself with her bizaare behaviour at times and she generally gained media attention for all the wrong reasons.  She would readily disrobe and display her ample figure, which could be disconcerting to say the least.

Rest in Peace Anna, your turmoil is now over.

Australia Day Concert And Fireworks

Fireworks on Australia Day 2007We  have just spent a pleasant evening by lake Burley Griffin watching spectacular fireworks.

Parking as always was a bit of a problem, and we finally settled on a grassed area near the lake and only a short walk from where the fireworks were to go off.  We joined the many other Canberran’s who had arrived early to catch the concert prior to the fireworks.

Cedie was a little upset at the loud noise of the fireworks going off.  However, she was fascinated by the jet-skiers riding around the lake with pyrotechnics strapped on.

There were fireworks set up to create a “waterfall effect” on Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, and an in-air “dump and burn” (also known as an after burn) by a Royal Australian Air Force F-111.

The pyrotechnic extravaganz was provided by  Martin Brady of Fireworks Australia.  The barrage of fireworks were launched from a number of sites, including a barge on Lake Burley Griffin, the roof of Questacon and the carillon, and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.

The display  took  five months of planning, and the fireworks were set to a specially commissioned Australia Day soundtrack, featuring the indigenous community, Australian poetry and Australian artists.

The crowd around us were all delighted with the spectacle and clapped enthusiastically as wave after wave of fantastic lights burst overhead.

Well done Canberra  – another triumph.

Cedie waiting patiently, as you can see we arrived reasonably early.

Ce’Nedra Waiting for the Fun To Begin

Australia Day Live Concert 2007

My friend Paula and I took my two grandchildren, Demelza and Ce’Nedra to the Australia Day Live Concert and shared the excitement with 35000 other Australian’s on the lawns of Parliament House.

The concert opened with TV Rock and Demelza was beside herself to be so close to the action and franticly did the teenage girl thing, SMS’d everyone she knew.

TV Rock set a cracking pace that unfortunately didn’t quite follow through with the majority of the songs after, being more ballad that rock.  Sick Puppies gave a credible performane and Renee Geyer belted out some classic rock.

Damien Leith showed why he won Australian Idol, he comes across as  a very unassuming and humble person.  Video was shown of him being sworn in as  an Australian Citizen by the Prime Minister, after 5 years of living in Australia,

‘Dicko’ was also at the concert and he and his family are also to become Australian citizens on Australia Day.

The crowd was extremely well behaved and the sense of pride and patriotism was palpable.

We had a great night, and Cedie who is a 9 year old was more interested in eating her way through the chips, biscuits and chocolate.  Although she did love the ‘Pricilla – Queen of the Desert’ performers, especially the cupcake dancers. We all cheered with delight at their performance.

Many people sported the Aussie flag and had painted faces.

In all it was a great way to start the weekend celebrations.

McNaught’s Comet Over Canberra

On Wednesday evening, just after dinner, we went outside for a look at McNaught’ comet.
This is reportedly the brightest comet to have been seen over Australian skies for 40 years.
The comet was named after it’s the Australian astronomer who discovered it last year.

While we all stood there looking up into the sunset sky with the neighbours, discussions turned to how close this had come to earth and how the powers that be in America were looking at ways to divert comets away from earth.

Of  course  Bruce Willis’s name came up as the saviour of the earth as we have all seen  Armageddon.
Richard Bramston and his planned trips to the moon was a hot topic and then we oldies decided we were going to miss out on so much in the coming years.

The coming generations have so much to look forward to with todays technological advances. We can only hope that it doesn’t all get ruined for them by power hungry beaurocrats who are only hell bent on control.

And the subject came up of whether or not the Americans actually landed on the moon or if it was a carefully stage ploy to outdo the Russians who had just sent Yuri Gugarin up into space. I guess a lot of us are conspiracy theorists at heart.

But I digress. This was a pleasant evening watching a sight that won’t return to earth for some time.

Howard Reshuffles Cabinet

Senator Amanda Vanstone has been shuffled out of the Immigration Portfolio and has been replaced by the current Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Kevin Andrews.

Senator Ian Campbell has been replaced by Malcolm Turnbull as the minister for the newly renamed Department of Environment and Water Resources.

The Howard Government is hopeful that Turnbull will  prove to be an equal match  for the  the Labour Party’s environmental spokesman, former pop star turned politician, Peter Garrett.

With Australia in the grip of the worst drought on record, recent polls show that climate change and water management  are hot issues for Australian voters.

Human Services Minister,  Joe Hockey,  has been appointed Workplace Relations Minister leaving the former Minister for the Environment, Ian Campbell,  to take over the reigns of the Human Services Portfolio.

The Human Services portfolio brings six agencies under one umbrella – Centrelink, Medicare, Child Support Agency, CRS Australia, Australian Hearing and Health Services Australia.

Campbell will have the task of overseeing the introduction of the AU$1 billion health and social services access card. The card will replace 17 health and social service cards, including the Medicare card and will contain personal data such as name, address  and concession status on a chip.

Be interesting to see what else gets added to the National Identity Card in the future.

“Any government that wants to issue a unique identification number to most of the population and then to compile and link information about them using increasingly powerful technology bears a heavy onus to justify its case. …
‘Nothing to hide, nothing to fear’, directed at each member of the public, should be turned around and directed at government as: ‘No legitimate reason to know, no legitimate reason to ask’.”

Paul Chadwick, Victorian Privacy Commissioner, The Value of Privacy, 23 May 2006.

Ancient Egyptian Artifacts From the Louvre Exhibition – Canberra

If you are looking to spend an educational and enthralling few hours with the kids these school holidays, then look no further than the Exhibition of Ancient Egyptian Artifacts from the Louvre exhibition currently in Canberra.

The exhibition has Canberrans turning out in droves to get a glimpse of the ancient artifacts. People the world over have always been fascinated by an ancient culture whose preoccupation with death saw them perfom many rites and rituals to ensure that their Pharoh travelled safely to the afterlife.

It is truly amazing seeing items that have weathered the passage of time like the painted heiroglypics on a wooden sarcophagous and the parchment documented with passages from the book of the dead.

A particular favouite of mine is the black diorite sarcophagous of  Tanethep. This sarcophagous dates from the Ptolemaic period, 2nd century BCE.

On the outside of the lid of the sarcophagus are inscriptions of passages taken from the book of the dead. The inside of the lid  has a  naked representation of Nut, the goddess of the sky

On the base of the sarcophagus is an engraving of the goddess who represents the dead. Placing Tanethep in the sacophagus between the two goddesses was meant to ensure her eternal rebirth.

The ancient Egyptians practiced many rites and rituals to ensure their Pharohs were well equiped to go into  the afterlife.

It was good to see the number of children explaining the significance of the various artifacts and depictions of gods, to the their parents.  Egyptology is a fascinating subject and just being able to see and read about the richness of this ancient culture makes this exhibition one worth seeing and one the whole family will enjoy.

KDND FM Radio Station Employees Fired Over Woman’s Death

Some people will do anything to win a competition and unfortunately in this case it led to the death of a 28 year old woman in Sacramento California.

What probably seemed like a harmless bit of fun, became a tragedy because the people involved hadn’t done their homework and understood the dire consequences of drinking too much water in one go.

For those who are unaware drinking large quantities of water rapidly can cause brain swelling and lead to seizures, coma and death. Which is exactly what happened in this case.

So instead of a Wii this young lady ended up dying.  This is a very sad outcome for what could have been avoided had the radio station employees just done a little research ahead of time.

iPhone – I want one

I will more than likely succumb and buy an iphone when they are released. The more I read about them the better they sound.  I like the idea of having a phone with an internet display I can actually read.  And not having to use a stylus is a plus. I am forever misplacing the ones to my O2 and DS.

Be interesting to see how long the batteries last. But having said that I simply charge my O2 through the computer so I guess the iPhone will have similar functionality.

Apple iPhone Looks Interesting

iPhoneLooking to update your phone, then how about the new Apple iPhone when it is released later this year. This product gives you the benefit of a combination of  three products — a  mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and  an Internet communications device.

You can use your  iPhone to browse the web, send and receive emails, and access maps. Check  out Google and satellite images, get directions and traffic reports. Pretty cool for a lightweight, hand held device.  The iPhone includes applications that give you helpful information such as  stock reports and weather updates, and other useful information, in real time.

The iPhone features a rich HTML email client and Safari- which is the most advanced  web browser used on a portable device. You will see webpages in the format they are meant to be seen and have the functionality to zoom in by simply tapping the screen with your finger.

You can automatically sync bookmarks from your PC or Mac .  Safari includes built in Google and Yahoo and not only that but the iPhone is fully multi-tasking, while you are surfing the net you can be downloading your email, including photos and graphics in the background, over Wi-Fi.

iPhone is a 3.5 inch widescreen display iPod with touch controls that allows you to access all of your information at the touch of a finger.  You can sync all your music, audiobooks, videos, TV shows, and movies from your iTunes library on your PC or Mac.   You can easily pause, fast forward or rewind movies.

This little beauty has all the sophistication and power of the worlds most advanced operating system. The OS X redefines what you can do with a portable handheld device.
